The Original Homestead House
Cedar Moon Cottage was originally built in the late 1920's and home to one of the founding families of the Maxwelton Valley. Six children were raised in the space, with cold water coming from Quade creek up the road a ways, no electricity, and no bathroom facility, save for an out house. In the winter, the pipes would freeze, making the luxury of running water a dream of warmer days to come. Life was hard in those days on Whidbey, most lived through subsistence farming or fishing, as a farm hand, or working in the lumber industry. Roads were not paved and very muddy in the rainy seasons; horses provided transport until the first cars appeared when the ferry began to bring them in the late 1930's.
When we bought the homestead years ago, we remodeled the cottage tearing off the slanted roof and replacing it with the high pitched roof and sky lights present now. The wood from the torn roof was salvaged and is now the rustic wainscoting and trim found inside surrounding the walls and windows. The floor is original. Large windows were placed at either end of the building to take advantage of the cedar forest and garden views.
Like a big, fresh breath, good energy infiltrated this delightful renovated space and became our "Yoga Sanctuary". For five good years, this cottage housed up to 12 yoga and tai chi classes a week, supported regular women’s circles and cultivated creative arts workshops.
Now it is available to you! Come stay for a few nights or a week and experience Whidbey-affordably and comfortably.
